Your oral health depends on cleaning your mouth on a daily basis. In order for your oral hygiene to function on at peak levels, you need to make sure your mouth is clean by cleaning your teeth and gums and between your teeth and gums every single day. Not only should you be brushing your teeth twice a day, but you should also floss between your teeth at least once a day as well.

In order to protect your smile, it is important to make sure you are flossing effectively. This includes using the proper techniques and tools. When selecting of dental floss, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The seal is awarded to products that are guaranteed to meet ideal standards for safety and effectiveness.

For traditional help when selecting a dental floss product, speak with your dentist for product recommendations and suggestions. As an alternative to traditional threaded floss, water flossers can be used. Water flossers are highly effective interdental cleaners that use beams of water to clean between teeth.

If you do decide on using traditional threaded floss, make sure your strand is long enough to clean between each tooth without using the same section of the strand more than once. This helps prevent recontamination. Ideally, each strand should be roughly 18” in length and wrapped around a finger on each hand for easy access up and down the strand. Once you’re finished flossing, throw the strand away and use a new piece for each subsequent flossing session.
